In December 2016 Anne Jennings was announced Principal Winner of the Design Excellence category at BALI's Award Ceremony for this Private Chelsea Garden. The project has also gained Anne a finalist place in the SGD's Small Residential Garden and People's Choice categories.
Our clients presented us with an irresistible Brief - to create a garden that had the character of a lost and rediscovered treasure. Responding to a requirement that nothing was to look new we used calibrated reclaimed York stone for paving, sourced antique urns and pots and saved as much of the mature existing ivy to clad the boundaries and enclose the garden in evergreen walls. We created 'mis-en-scene' features giving the illusion that the garden led onto other areas beyond its boundaries. These feature included reclaimed, distressed oak doors, reconstituted stone arches and an old factory mirror.
Access was challenging, with the side path reducing to 600mm at the pinch point. This meant that trees were craned into the garden and the beautiful bespoke Shepherd's Hut was brought in panels and constructed on-site. The final challenge of the project was that our clients lived overseas for the main design and construction process so all negotiations and approvals were arranged by email and Skype, with paving and other samples sent by post.
