Cliveden Hotel Stage 2 - BALI Award Winner 2016, Design Excellence Category
Cliveden House is a privately owned 5* Hotel and Spa that sits within a 375-acre Buckinghamshire estate, the latter being under custodianship of the National Trust. This Award Entry included the design and installation of planters and trellis screens in the Clocktower Courtyard and of hardwood screens, planters and trellis on the Garden Terraces.
The simplicity of the completed projects belies to a great extent the level of technical, detailed design required to ensure our work complied with various restrictions and regulations imposed by Cliveden's Grade 1 listing. The installation process had to be fine-tuned almost to the hour to ensure work did not unduly impact on Hotel residents -Cliveden remained fully functioning throughout the installation process.
Tight timescales and the fact that construction areas were shared with the main contractors meant the iroko slat screens were built off-site, to reduce on-site installation time. Planters were detailed to such an extent that lockable castors were discreetly built into the base and the wirework trellis supplied by separate manufacturers slotted neatly into the bottom of each.
Our greatest challenge was in designing a method of securing the posts and screens onto the terrace when no in-ground installations could be used – any fixings had to be onto the surface of the slabs. We designed a system that relied on several innovative methods of securing the posts, each of which were approved by the clients’ engineers. In addition, we were required to design the screens to be as lightweight as possible. We designed a rail-enclosed system to secure the slats, which had the benefit of the screens having no 'back-side' i.e. they had the same design detail when viewed from each terrace.
